Summary

Postdoctoral position in fundamental neutron research: Los Alamos is the home of the Los Alamos Neutron Scattering Center (LANSCE). An ultra-cold neutron (UCN) source is currently under development where experiments in fundamental symmetries can be fielded. Successful candidates are expected to play an important role in our program in fundamental neutron physics at LANSCE and, in the future, at the SNS. LANL is leading major efforts in this field. Current experiments are: measurement of parity violation in neutron-proton capture (the NPDGamma experiment), measurement of the electron asymmetry in neutron decay using bottled ultra-cold neutrons (the UCN-A experiment), and an experiment to search for the neutron electric dipole moment (EDM). Experiments under development include measurement of neutron decay parameters using cold neutrons (abBA) and a measurement of the neutron lifetime using ultra-cold neutrons. Successful candidates are expected to have a variety of opportunities to take responsibility in one or more of the experiments either underway or in development. Participate in all aspects of fundamental physics with neutron experiments, including proposing new ideas, developing experimental techniques, commissioning experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and publishing physics results. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to present their results to the international community and to further their career by speaking in a variety of venues. Postdocs will join teams of other postdocs and staff members as well as university collaborators. Current postdocs and graduate students in nuclear, particle or atomic physics are encouraged to apply.

Required Skills

An outstanding record of accomplishment appropriate to the career stage of the candidate in one of the fields of nuclear, high-energy, or atomic physics, as evidenced by publications, talks, participation in major experiments, awards, and recommendations. Candidates should have effective interpersonal skills and the ability to foster and encourage open and clear communication.

Desired Skills

Experience in the sub-field of fundamental physics with neutrons desirable but not required.

Education

A Ph.D in Nuclear or Particle Physics or related field completed within the last five years or soon to be completed is required.

Notes To Applicants

For further information contact Martin Cooper at mcooper@lanl.gov or Takeyasu Ito at ito@lanl.gov.

Pre-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a pre-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Government Conflict of Interest

To ensure that you and LANL avoid any potential conflicts of interest, all current/former Government Officials must read and respond, if applicable, to the LANL Applicant Disclosure Form.
