Position Overview

Detonator Fabrication, WCM-3, provides WR production, as well as other production support for detonator development, and other projects involving high explosives. Under direct supervision, the successful applicant will assist in setting up and performing fabrication processes using lasers, presses, machine tools, and/or inspection of fabricated components. Applicant will perform precision assembly and pressing of high explosives. The successful applicant must be willing and capable of handling small parts and performing repetitive tasks, and be willing to participate in the development of techniques to accomplish these tasks. Work includes the interpretation of engineering drawings, and fabrication and/or inspection of parts to the specified requirements.

Key Position Requirements

Experience in the inspection, fabrication, or assembly of small complex components. Must have ability to handle small parts and to perform highly repetitive tasks. Must be able to work from engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions and have the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Functional experience with computer systems is required. Experience using File Maker Pro, Excel, and Microsoft Word software. Knowledge of geometric tolerancing and dimensioning. Working knowledge of ISO 9000 or DOE Quality Criteria QC-1. Experience in the pressing and assembly of explosives. Candidate must have the ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance which normally requires US citizenship.

Summary

Design, assemble, test, and/or modify distinctive/prototypical electrical and/or mechanical components, assemblies and systems that include specialized functions, often for unique application.  Apply technical job knowledge and proposed solutions to design challenges.  Includes specification of procured components, interpretation of component and assembly design drawings, and shop fabrication / assembly liaison as applicable.  Testing aspects of the job may include one or more of the following; develop and or modify test procedures, generate/acquire test data, interpret and document test results and troubleshooting.  This job also requires generating design, assembly and test documentation as appropriate and in-process inspection to assure product quality.  Electrical responsibilities include these functions applied to analog, digital, and RF circuitry.  Mechanical responsibilities include mechanisms, structures, vacuum systems, pressure systems, fluid containment systems, optical equipment, measurement equipment, containment systems, glovebox systems, fabrication equipment, process equipment, automated equipment, tooling and fixturing.

Job Duties

  1. Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees.   2. (LC) Uses and applies technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques within discipline and of other related fields to perform work.

  5. Uses and applies basic design standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques in the completion of assigned work.
  6. Uses standard CAD systems to display and generate drawings of simple systems and subsystem components based on information received from others.
  7. Interprets information on drawings such as bills-of-materials, specifications and related data to procure components and locate components in support of assembly and testing.
  8. Modifies existing drawings per detailed instructions from an engineer or higher-level design and test technician.
  9. Performs routine test measurements based on detailed instructions and document results on standard form for review by others.
  10. Performs basic set up, alignments, maintenance, operations, and/or calibration of conventional tools and/or equipment on most materials.
  11. Assists in the design of testing experiments and diagnostic equipment.
  12. Uses a variety of tools and precision measuring instruments.
  13. Supports prototype development; provides input for custom parts, assemblies, and testing.
  14. Performs operational test and fault isolation on systems and equipment. 
  15. Maintains documentation; documents results and generates reports.
  16. Recommends and/or performs appropriate modifications.
  17. Monitors and verifies quality control and inspection in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.
  18. Assists in determining methods or actions to remedy malfunctions.
  19. Assembles, disassembles, modifies, reworks, reassembles, and tests basic, experimental or prototype assemblies and subassemblies according to specifications and under simulated conditions.
  20. Manages waste; identifies, labels and disposes of waste per required procedures; handles and stores hazardous materials in accordance with LANL and regulatory requirements.
  21. Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance.
  22. Ensures all work, materials, processes and final product meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
  23. Fosters a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

  • Basic knowledge and experience with electrical or mechanical design, installation, testing, repair, and maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of computer-aided design (CAD) software tools.
  • Basic knowledge of relevant techniques and components (e.g. electrical: resistors/capacitors/inductors/diodes/ transistors/basic logic devices; mechanical: basic hand tools, basic machining operations)
  • Ability to read and understand engineering instructions, drawings, layouts, and other related specifications.
  • Awareness of test laboratory protocols and principles and basic technical responsibilities.
  • Awareness of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards, and guides.
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting electronic or mechanical systems and/or equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and as well as collaboratively as part of a team.

Education

  • Position typically requires a high school diploma and at least two-to-four years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Direction

A. Supervision Received 

  • Receives functional and operational direction from the designated supervisor/manager. Detailed instructions given for new assignments. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy and accuracy.
