Federal Strategic Plan for the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development

February 25, 2009 8:30 AM  to
February 26, 2009 3:00 PM
Washington, D.C.

Forum

Federal Strategic Plan
for the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development Program

The Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) invites you to participate via live web cast in a public forum to solicit content recommendations for the development of a five-year Federal Strategic Plan for the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Program. The NITRD program comprises thirteen Federal agencies as core members and a number of other participating agencies. Collectively, the NITRD agencies invest more than $3 billion annually in research and development (R&D) for the advancement of networking and information technologies. The NITRD program provides a means for cooperation and coordination among agencies. Information about the NITRD program can be found at http://www.nitrd.gov/.

The five year strategic plan will identify high-level R&D goals that cut across the networking and information technology landscape, meet the broad needs of the public and private sectors, and enhance the efforts of Federal agencies in meeting their respective missions. It has the potential to influence budget priorities across the thirteen agencies as well as within CISE and the Office of Cyberinfrastructure (OCI), which together provide more than 25 percent of the federal government's annual investment in networking and information technology.

Forum discussion sessions will be held 8:30am-5pm Wednesday, February 25th and 8:30am-3pm Thursday, February 26th. (All times are EST.) Comments and questions will be solicited from the web cast audience. By February 1, 2009, the NITRD web site (http://www.nitrd.gov/) will provide the URL for the web cast and the email alias for questions to be directed to the participants. The web cast will be archived for future viewing. Once the forum is over, comments may still be sent to the email alias, but questions can no longer be answered by the participants.

Invited panel discussants for the forum sessions include:

Owen Astrachan, Duke

Jane Margolis, UCLA

Tom Baer, Stanford

Michael Nelson, Georgetown

Fran Berman, SDSC

Dan Reed, Microsoft

Stu Feldman, Google

Gene Spafford, Purdue

Susan Graham, UC Berkeley

Doug Van Houweling, Internet2

Bob Kahn, CNRI

Bryant York, Portland State

Maria Klawe, Harvey Mudd

This is one means by which you can help to shape future investments in the field of computing.  We hope that you can participate.
