National Health Service Corps Job Opportunities
Job Opportunities connect qualified clinicians with approved
NHSC community sites that are currently hiring primary care, dental
care and mental health clinicians. These job opportunities are
eligible for fulfillment of the NHSC service obligation, but are
open to all qualified clinicians interested
in serving the underserved.
and the NHSC Scholarship
The NHSC has an annual
limit on the number of vacancies that can be approved and posted
for the NHSC Scholarship and Loan Repayment Programs. This limit
is published annually in the Federal Register (view
this year's Federal Register Notice). Once a site has met
the maximum number allowed in the placement cycle, all remaining
vacancies will be categorized as VL for volunteer.
scholars are required to serve their commitments in NHSC-approved
sites with the greatest need. Need is determined by the
Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designation score indicated
for each job opportunity — the higher the score, the higher
Scores Required for NHSC Scholars in Fiscal Year 2009
Scholars must match
to sites with HPSA scores as follows:
care physicians (family medicine, internal medicine,
obstetrics/gynecology or pediatrics) must match to a site with
a primary care HPSA score of 14 or higher;
assistants, family nurse practitioners and certified nurse-midwives
must match to a site with a primary care HPSA
score of 14 or higher;
must match to a site with a mental health
HPSA score of 19 or higher;
must match to a site with a dental HPSA score
of 17 or higher.
Scholars should be
aware that they are competing for these opportunities with both
NHSC Loan Repayment Program applicants and non-NHSC clinicians.
The NHSC approves
practice sites throughout the year and NHSC
Job Opportunities are updated daily.
As job opportunities
are filled, there are fewer positions from which to choose.
The NHSC recommends
that scholars participate in the summer Scholar Orientation Conference,
which provides site match information and a job fair. Additionally,
the NHSC recommends that scholars apply to job opportunities as
early as possible in the placement cycle.
and the NHSC Loan Repayment Program
The National Health
Service Corps Loan Repayment Program is a competitive program
that recruits fully trained and licensed health professionals
to provide primary care, dental care, and mental health services
at NHSC-approved sites. In return, the NHSC LRP assists
clinicians with repayment of qualifying educational loans that
are still owed.
Employment at an eligible
site is a requirement for applicants to qualify for the NHSC Loan
Repayment Program, but employment at an eligible site
is not a guarantee of an award . Awards are granted first
to clinicians serving at NHSC-approved sites with the greatest
need; applicants serving at NHSC-approved sites with less need
are awarded as resources allow.
Need is determined
by the Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designation score
indicated for each job opportunity — the higher the score,
the higher the need.
and non-NHSC Clinicians
Job Opportunities are open to all qualified clinicians dedicated
to serving underserved populations — not only NHSC clinicians.
NHSC Loan Repayors are eligible for both Scholar and Loan Repayor
vacancies. Vacancies in the volunteer category are at NHSC-approved
sites, but are not approved for NHSC scholars or loan repayors.
