President Declares Major Disaster for New Hampshire

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that federal disaster aid has been made available for the state of New Hampshire. The assistance will supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas struck by severe storms and flooding beginning on September 6-7, 2008, and continuing.
FEMA Director David Paulison said the assistance was authorized under a major disaster declaration issued for the state of New Hampshire by President Bush. The President's action makes federal funding available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe storms and flooding in Hillsborough County.
Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.
Paulison named Mark H. Landry as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected area. Landry said that damage surveys are continuing in other areas, and additional counties may be designated for assistance after the assessments are fully completed.
