Objective of Project:

The objectives of the project are to provide collaboration in small animal imaging to oncology investigators and to provide for research, development, and training in small animal imaging technologies. Improved small animal imaging facilities will enhance the use of mouse and other rodent models and the integration of imaging methods into the study of the molecular bases for cancer. The funding mechanism will be the U24 collaborative agreement resource mechanism.

Description of Project:

Through this initiative, the NCI will support a number of Small Animal Imaging Resource Programs (SAIRPs) allowing oncology investigators access to more than one small animal imaging technology. The Principal Investigator and the community of users for a particular center will decide on the focus of the Resource and the direction of research to improve the technology for the use with small animals. The RFA would require that the SAIRPs provide: 1) At least two imaging technologies for small animals; 2) Research and development on innovative imaging methods applicable to or required for oncology-related research investigations involving the use of small animals; 3) Facilities and personnel to assist in the development of necessary molecular probes for the cancer imaging technologies provided; 4) Facilities and personnel to aid in small animal anesthesia, management, and care, as well as to consult on the optimal and appropriate (including humane and proper) use of animals for research purposes in connection with the imaging experiments; and 5) Training of individuals from institutions throughout the country in the science and techniques of small animal imaging.
