Interdisciplinary Scientist

Position Series/number: Interdisciplinary Scientists can be Biologists (401), Chemists (1320), or other Scientific or Clinical Occupation.
Grade Scale: GS-11 - 15, Title 42


Job Description
The NIH Interdisciplinary Scientist provides input and maintains cognizance of far-reaching or controversial decisions concerning appropriate study design, objectives, endpoints, patient populations and efficacy, safety and toxicity indicators for international trials. They work to facilitate the resolution of problems and verify that all ethical, State Department and other required clearances and approvals have been acquired. Additionally, they advise on and participate in the management, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of clinical trials, consult with and represent the office in interaction with the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry to develop plans for testing agents, particularly with regard to study design, feasibility and relative priority or in other high-level interactions with the private or public sector. The Interdisciplinary Scientist serves as a scientific liaison with other scientists and with scientific and other professional staff representing FDA or other Government agencies, or non-government organizations and institutions, and may serve as liaison representative to clinical trials groups at the committee and working group level to ensure needed information flow, share planning strategies and to articulate priorities and goals for clinical research.
