Position Overview

The DARHT Accelerator R&D group (HX-6) is responsible for research, technology development, and operation of HX Division's radiographic machines, pulse power systems, and electron beam transport systems. At DARHT, we perform non-nuclear testing using high performance x-rays to measure the many complex, dynamic aspects of nuclear weapons in support of the Stockpile Stewardship Program. This position will involve accelerator systems design and analysis at all levels, from detailed analysis to systems assessment. The specific responsibilities involve design, analysis, and fabrication of accelerator process and scientific equipment, and include coordinating and supervising installation and testing activities. The successful applicant will become the engineering SME for the DARHT First Axis accelerator. Applicants should have a working knowledge of process and scientific equipment related to accelerator facilities and/or pulsed-power systems, and should be proficient in the use of finite element codes. The work and assignments will include the responsibility to meet and interface with numerous personnel from within the Division and outside organizations to ensure that interfaces between systems, experiments, and programmatic functions are addressed. Successful applicant will ensure that work is performed safely and securely, and will provide written reports, documentation, and procedures as required for development and operation of process and scientific equipment.

Key Position Requirements

Required Skills: Demonstrated experience in the design, fabrication, installation, and operation of process and scientific equipment related to particle accelerator facilities and/or pulse-power systems. Demonstrated up-to-date analytical skills in two or more of the following areas: system design, precision machine design, heat transfer, fluid flow, high-vacuum systems, and structural analysis of complex systems. Working knowledge of engineering design tools including CAD packages and mechanical and structural analysis codes. Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication, and experience working effectively in a team environment. Proven ability to deliver on time, within budget. Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" clearance, which normally requires US citizenship. Desired Skills: Background in pulsed-power systems and beam transport systems. A working knowledge of structural analysis of components, with an ability to work on design problems requiring coupling or iteration between thermal performance, high-voltage pulsed-power performance, and structural performance. Experience with design, fabrication, and maintenance of high-vacuum systems, including pumps, gauges, RGAs, and other diagnostics. Experience with optical and laser alignment systems. Experience in experimental test design or operation. Experience or ability to provide leadership for technical project teams. A demonstrated ability to apply innovative thinking and solutions to unique problems. Experience with ProEngineer and/or AutoCAD. BS, (MS preferred) in mechanical engineering or a related technical discipline.
