HHS Awards $70.6 Million for HIV/AIDS Care for At-Risk Communities
Awards to Help Disproportionately Affected Minority and Women Populations

HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has announced $70.6 million in funding to evaluate and address the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on women and minorities.

“HHS is focused on supporting life-extending care and a core set of clinical services that provide those living with HIV the resources they need to lead productive lives,” HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt said. “ America 's continuing commitment in fighting HIV/AIDS benefits from state and local planning, accountability and measured progress. These awards help communities across America put an end to disparities in access, care, and health outcomes related to HIV/AIDS.”

The grants are awarded under the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, which helps more than 530,000 medically underserved individuals every year. The program is managed by HRSA.

Two awards, totaling almost $49 million, are part of the Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI). The grants are awarded to cities and states, which compete for funding to address disparities in access, treatment, care, and health outcomes. More than 65 percent of all Ryan White Program clients are minorities.

In addition, the Ryan White Part D awards -- totaling $21.8 million -- support HIV/AIDS care for women, infants , children and youth, focusing on f amily-centered primary and specialty medical care, support services, and the provision of information and education on opportunities to participate in HIV/AIDS-related clinical research.

“These grants address critical areas in HIV/AIDS care,” said Elizabeth M. Duke, HRSA Administrator. “With this funding, we can help populations who are most affected by the epidemic, including minorities and women.”

In FY 2007, $2.1 billion was appropriated to support the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. For additional information, visit http://hab.hrsa.gov/. The grant awards are listed below:
