HRSA Awards $18.6 Million to Support Health Professionals Training

HRSA Administrator Elizabeth M. Duke today announced Fiscal Year 2007 awards totaling $18.6 million to support training programs for nurses, physicians and physician assistants.

The awards are from the following programs:

  • Twenty-three new Nursing Workforce Diversity Program awards totaling $6.8 million were made to academic institutions to increase nursing education for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities who are underrepresented among nurses. Authorized under Title VIII, Section 821 of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, the program supported 4,454 nursing students in FY 2006.

  • Twenty-nine Residency Training in Primary Care grants totaling $5.5 million were made to support residency programs in family medicine. In addition, 18 Pre-Doctoral Training in Primary Care grants totaling $3.2 million were made to medical schools to enhance pre-doctoral programs in family medicine.

  • Five Preventive Medicine Residency Training Grants Program awards totaling $1.2 million were made to schools of medicine, osteopathic medicine and public health to develop new residency training programs and maintain or improve existing residency programs in preventive medicine.

  • Five universities were awarded Physician Assistant Training in Primary Care grants totaling $907,928 to develop and operate physician assistant training programs and to train individuals to teach in these programs. Two universities were awarded Faculty Development: Integrated Technology into Nursing Education & Practice Initiative grants totaling $572,827. And three medical institutions received Faculty Development in Primary Care awards totaling $453,932 to devise training programs for physicians that plan to teach in family medicine.

HRSA awards competitive grants and cooperative agreements under Title VII of the PHS Act to train and educate health care professionals at more than 1,700 institutions. Title VII and Title VIII programs promote workforce diversity and help ensure that health professions curricula reflect changes in the nation's health care needs.
