HHS Awards Nearly $10 Million to Provide Oral Health
Services
for People Living with HIV/AIDS
HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced 66 grants totaling
$9.9 million to help dental education programs provide oral health services
for Americans living with HIV/AIDS.
"A weakened immune system can leave people with HIV/AIDS at risk
for serious infections, including those that start orally," Secretary
Thompson said. "These grants will help to ensure people with HIV/AIDS
get good oral health services when needed, reducing these risks.”
The grants are awarded to eligible dental schools, postdoctoral dental
education programs and dental hygiene education programs under the Ryan
White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act, which is administered
by HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration through its HIV/AIDS
Bureau.
Since the CARE Act was first funded in fiscal year 1991, nearly $10
billion has been awarded in grants to provide needed health care and
associated services for people living with HIV/AIDS. A list of the fiscal
