HRSA Sponsors U.S.-Mexico Border HIV/AIDS Conference

HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration is sponsoring a two-and-a-half-day conference for healthcare professionals from both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border that will focus on the latest HIV/AIDS research, information and care and treatment.

HRSA’s U.S.-Mexico HIV/AIDS Border Conference, which begins today and runs through Wednesday in Tucson, Ariz., will give participants the opportunity to share experiences and findings in the fields of medical care and direct and prevention services.  Twenty-four workshops will discuss recent research and train participants on proper treatment and care of people living with HIV disease.

Conference planners expect 300 participants from both sides of the border, including primary healthcare providers, counselors, researchers and case managers in HIV/AIDS management. The conference is being hosted by HRSA grantee El Rio Health Center, Inc.

Today the conference will host the first-ever meeting of all four U.S. border state HIV/AIDS directors and six Mexican state HIV/AIDS directors.

In addition to HRSA, other sponsors include HHS’ Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, along with the Arizona Department of Health Services, University of Arizona's Division of HIV Policy and Outcomes Research, Community Partnership of Southern Arizona, National Minority AIDS Council, Tucson Hospital Medical Education Program, Pacific AIDS Education and Training Center, ABBOTT Laboratories, Inc., and Agouron Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

For more information, contact El Rio’s Stephen Trujillo at (520) 628-8287 or by e-mail at steveAT@elrio.org.
