HRSA Grants Will Help Small Rural Hospitals Improve Performance

In today’s Federal Register, HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration announced the availability of $15 million in grants for small rural hospitals to improve performance and reduce medical errors.

The new grant program, managed by HRSA’s Office of Rural Health Policy, will also help recipients:

  • with costs related to implementation of prospective payment systems; and
  • comply with provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.

Eligible applicants are all small rural hospitals, defined as those having 49 available beds or less.  Participants are encouraged to form consortiums and pool their grant funds to purchase needed goods and services.

HRSA expects to award up to 1,300 grants of equal amount through state offices of rural health.  Applications are due by June 21, and awards will be announced in late September.

A list of eligible hospitals can be found at http://www.ruralhealth.hrsa.gov/ship.htm.  Application packages are being mailed to all hospitals on this list.  For more information on the Small Rural Hospital Improvement Grant Program, contact Jerry Coopey at 301-443-0835; fax 301-443-2803; email: jcoopey@hrsa.gov.
