Student Jobs

Like history? Want to learn more about archives and records management while earning money to help pay for tuition?

We employ hundreds of high school, college, and graduate students each year under these programs:

  • Student Career Experience Program (SCEP)
  • Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP)

About the Programs

SCEP is an ongoing cooperative education program that is commonly referred to as the "Co-Op" program.

  • The program offers you the opportunity to gain work experience that is directly related to your academic field of study.
  • The program can also lead to permanent employment at the National Archives after graduation — upon successful completion of your academic and work requirements, you will be eligible for conversion to a permanent position.

STEP is a temporary employment program that is commonly referred as the "Student Temp" program.

  • Employment under the STEP program can range from summer jobs to positions that last as long as you are a student.
  • STEP offers maximum flexibility to students who are looking for temporary employment — schedules are flexible, and your work does not have to be directly related to your academic field of study.

Eligibility Requirements

You are eligible for student employment at the National Archives if you are all of the following:

  • A student enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student (diploma, certificate, etc.)

  • At least the minimum age required by Federal, state or local laws and standards governing the employment of minors

  • Taking at least a half-time academic or vocational/technical course load in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, or graduate or professional school

  • A U.S. citizen

Pay and Benefits

Students are paid under the General Schedule (GS) Federal pay system and are hired at Grades GS-1 through GS-9 according to their level of education.

  • The GS grades vary according to the degree being pursued and the level of work being performed.
  • Students also earn leave credit for illness and vacation.
