Command Assesses Robot to Help Save Soldiers' Lives |
FORT HOOD, Texas, Jan. 28, 2005 – It looks like a robot from the movie, "Short Circuit" – a miniature Johnny 5 that rolls on four wheels and has a video camera lens for eyes.
It peers around doors and windows, carefully adjusts its height to survey the area, and rolls carefully towards suspicious-looking vehicles and objects. There it remains still, focusing on the suspected object, and waits for a signal from the operator to tell it where to go to next. The Multi Function Agile Remote-Controlled Robot, or the MARCBOT, demonstrated its abilities to soldiers from the U.S. Army Operational Test Command at the Fort Hood Military Operations on Urbanized Terrain site. The Command Mentors Students in Robotics Competition |
FORT HOOD, Texas, Jan. 28, 2005 – Early morning on Jan. 8, employees of the Operational Test Command joined students from Shoemaker High School to kick off the planning for the 2005 FIRST Robotics Competition. The Shoemaker High School robotics team, known as the CyberWolves, participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition for the last five years under the mentorship of command soldiers and employees. “We’ve tapped into Fort Hood since we’re so close to West Fort Hood,” Nelda Howton, Shoemaker High School principal, said. “There are scientists and engineers to serve as mentors, both contractors and active duty. Also, 75 percent of our students are military dependents.” Story
