New State Veterans Cemeteries

Iowa Veterans Cemetery

The Iowa Veterans Cemetery was dedicated on July 3, 2008. The current and former Governor of the state, both US Senators and three Congressmen attended the dedication and addressed a large gathering of visitors. The first of 80 scheduled interments began on July 7. The cemetery is located on 100 acres of scenic land adjacent to Interstate 80, ten miles west of Des Moines, Iowa. Ultimately, the cemetery can accommodate up to 80,000 burials. Pictured is the Committal Service Shelter where the dedication took place. The cemetery will serve 90,000 veterans located within a 75 mile radius. The project was a collaborative effort between the state of Iowa and the Department of Veterans Affairs State Cemetery Grants Program, which fully funded the construction of the project.

Western Montana State Cemetery

The Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery in Missoula opened Oct. 6, 2008. The 23-acre site is located on the former grounds of historic Fort Missoula; and includes 19 acres of in-ground interment, a columbarium, memorial plaza, committal shelter, and a grounds directory/restrooms facility. The cemetery's administration building includes a State of Montana veterans service office, thus providing comprehensive services. The cemetery will serve 24,000 veterans located within a 75-mile radius of this western Montana community. The Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery represents a partnership between the State of Montana, which is responsible for its perpetual operations and maintenance; and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which funded the cemetery's construction.

Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North

Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North was dedicated Aug. 22, 2008. The 99 acre site is located off Interstate 75 at mile marker one hundred fifty-four (154) in Williamstown. The Grant County Industrial Authority donated the land. Phase One construction includes a 3,600-square-foot administration building, a 4,400-square-foot maintenance building with service area, committal facility and a columbarium. It also has appropriate parking, road network, walking path and landscaping commensurate with the dignity and honor of a state veterans cemetery. The cemetery will serve 21,000 veterans within a 75-mile radius. The construction Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North was a result of collaboration between the State of Kentucky and the Department of Veterans Affair's State Cemetery Grants Program, which funded this cemetery 100 percent.
