Secretary Spellings today made the following statement on the Class of 2007 ACT scores:

ACT scores for the Class of 2007 have slightly improved, but we know that added rigor and accountability in our high schools will push these scores even higher. While scores have improved in all four required subject-area tests, more than half of all test-takers still fell short of the College Readiness Benchmarks. This is unacceptable when 90 percent of the fastest growing jobs require at least some post-secondary education. A college education has never been more important.

As part of the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind, President Bush is calling on states to better align their standards with college and workforce expectations, increase access to rigorous coursework, and report a more accurate high school graduation rate. These coupled with higher expectations will provide our students with the critical skills they need to succeed.
