FLETC receives Academy Accreditation

Brunswick, GA March 23, 2006

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation (FLETA) Board of Directors awarded Academy Accreditation to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in a ceremony on March 23 in Tysons Corner, Va.

“This accreditation speaks of our quality and elevates the status of FLETC training," said FLETC Director Connie Patrick.  "This recognition would not be possible without the tireless work of our staff who trains those who protect our homeland.”  Ms. Patrick went on to emphasize the importance Secretary Michael Chertoff, the Administration, and FLETC’s Partner Organizations place on quality law enforcement training.

Accreditation is a process that has been used within the United States for more than 200 years as a proven method for assisting hospitals, schools, and other institutions in the evaluation and improvement of their overall performance and effectiveness. More recently, it has become a practice in state and local law enforcement. In response to concerns regarding the ability of federal law enforcement to carry out the missions of their respective organizations, the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) provided funding to establish the Office of Accreditation and develop standards and an accreditation process for Federal law enforcement training. The standards for FLETA Accreditation were established by a core group of training professionals from Federal agencies and approved by the FLETA Board of Directors in March of 2005.

“Through the Accreditation process, FLETC has established its agency’s commitment to quality, effectiveness and integrity,” said FLETA Chairperson Sharon Henegan.  “We congratulate FLETC on this accomplishment.”

To maintain their accreditation status, FLETC is required to submit annual reports to the FLETA Board, and participate in a Re-Accreditation process every three years.

FLETC is an interagency training facility for the officers and agents from more than 80 law enforcement organizations, and trained approximately 50,000 students last fiscal year.
