FLETC implements new Anti-Terrorism/Port Security Boat Operators Training

Glynco, GA October 19, 2005

The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center’s Driver and Marine Division implemented a new training program for the Anti-Terrorism/Port Security Boat Operators Training Program beginning this fiscal year.

FLETC conducted the pilot curriculum August 29 thru September 2.  The training was attended by Federal, State, and local Marine Law Enforcement Officers from Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Alaska, Texas and Maine.

The Anti-Terrorism/Port Security Boat Operators Training Program (ATPSBOTP) is a one-week program designed to instruct the experienced marine law enforcement officer in advanced skills required to operate vessels in anti-terrorism/port security operations. This course of instruction provides students the ability to recognize potential terrorist targets, possible delivery methods and actions, which might indicate potential terrorist or criminal activity.  Instructors also teach the use of accepted terminology and tactics consistent with the Department of Homeland Security standards and U.S. Coast Guard policy and procedures.

"This course gives other Federal, State and local Marine Law Enforcement Officers a standard level of training, which will allow them to become force multipliers for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Homeland Security mission," said Billy McLeod, lead instructor with FLETC’s Driver and Marine Division.
