One of the greatest masterpieces of Renaissance art, Verrocchio's David, is coming to the United States. This tour represents the first time in 527 years that David will be seen with the slain head of Goliath as Verrocchio originally placed it, outside David's right foot. Verrocchio (c. 1435-1488) was a leading Florentine artist who had a profound impact on his pupil Leonardo da Vinci and on Renaissance sculpture. In Washington, Verrocchio's "David" Restored will be presented in a rich context of works (drawn from the Gallery's permanent collection) that reflect David's patronage, the artist's oeuvre, and the iconography of David and Goliath.
