In honor of the centenary of the birth of Gallery benefactor Paul Mellon, we present an exhibition of forty-two paintings and works on paper by Eugène Boudin (1824–1898). The Gallery's extensive collection of works by the artist is one of the largest and most distinguished in this country and was acquired mainly through gifts from Mr. and Mrs. Mellon. The exhibition features the small-scale paintings of wealthy tourists at fashionable Normandy resorts for which Boudin is best known. These works are accompanied by depictions of shipping and agrarian pursuits in rural Brittany, among them a suite of six carefully worked graphite drawings; a number of vivid, small watercolors and oil sketches; and several large-scale Salon paintings, including one that earned Boudin a medal at the Salon of 1883.
