USPTO Welcomes New Member to Management Team Stephen Smith Appointed Chief Administrative Officer Washington, D.C. - Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Jon Dudas has appointed Stephen Smith as the agency’s Chief Administrative Officer. Smith will be responsible for leading the Offices of Civil Rights, Human Resources, and Corporate Services. “I am pleased to have Steve join the USPTO organization. He brings USPTO a rich track record of providing administrative and engineering services. Steve’s leadership and skills will be instrumental in leading the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer and the USPTO in creating a quality-focused, highly productive and responsive organization,” said Under Secretary Dudas. Prior to joining the USPTO, Mr. Smith served as the associate director for management for the International Broadcasting Bureau. In that capacity, he provided human resources, administration, facilities, procurement, security and emergency planning services for the agency that supervises and supports all U.S. International Broadcasting. Previously, Mr. Smith served more than 27 years with the U. S. Army. His experience includes service as an infantry battalion commander in Desert Shield/Desert Storm and as chief of staff of the multi-national peacekeeping forces in the U.S. sector of Bosnia. He also served as the senior military assistant to the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. Mr. Smith is a 1972 graduate of the United States Military Academy (BS-Nuclear Engineering), the Army War College, and has a Masters in Management from Salve Regina University. ###
