Position Overview

Weapon Systems Engineering Division (W Division/W Program) provides systems engineering and program management to ensure the safety, reliability and security of our Nation's nuclear stockpile for the entire life cycle. W Division is responsible for leadership of activities in stockpile assessment, certification, and life extension projects. The primary mission of the W-11 group is to provide specialized weapon engineering, design, and product data management support to the Weapons Systems Engineering Division, the Weapons Engineering Directorate, and LANL users in other areas of the weapons program. The successful candidate will serve as both a lead for the Integrated Digital Environment (IDE) team in W-11 and a subject matter expert in PDMLink, Pro/E, and Arbortext, the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software suite, used by ADWE to manage all of its product lifecycle data for the weapons program. The incumbent will work with W-11 and personnel from other W Division Groups as well as with deployed CTN and IST personnel to develop, deploy, maintain and operate the mission critical W-11 PLM software tools with over 1000 accounts. This includes overseeing major upgrades of the software, performance tuning the software, ensuring proper backups are taking place and operating as a solution architect for development and deployment of new capabilities. The incumbent will also work as a team member in a larger group of experts that are responsible for similar PLM software sets across the Nuclear Weapons Complex (NWC). He or she will assist other NWC sites in implementing similar software solution sets with common configurations such that PLM information can be passed between agencies while maintaining proper need to know and configuration management controls.

Key Position Requirements

Required Skills: Demonstrated professional-level background and record of technical achievement in all of the following areas: " Advanced 3D solid modeling CAD systems, specifically Pro/Engineer: Demonstrated experience with the use of Pro/Engineer for Weapons Product Definition including detailed knowledge of the methods for managing models, drawings and other CAD data in PDMLink. Demonstrated experience with complex Pro/Engineer models, including, large assemblies, family tables, inheritance models, etc (expand and eliminate the etc) " Product Lifecycle Management systems, specifically PDMLink: Candidate must have advanced knowledge in implementing PLM systems using Parametric Technology Corporations (PTC) suite of software engineering tools for Computer Aided Design (CAD) data management, engineering configuration management (CM) control, and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). Specifically, the candidate must provide evidence of: " Installing, configuring, deploying, and maintaining Windchill PDMLink (versions 8 and 9), Pro/Engineer, Arbortext, ProductView, and MathCad in a production mode for an Engineering Organization. " Implementing integrated web-based applications to provide master product data management repository requirements. " Enabling organizational access to current and legacy data, while ensuring accurate information with Need To Know (NTK) access control via the Windchill PDMLink Policy Administrator and Access Actions Control panel. " Deploying ProjectLink for distributed, cross-enterprise collaboration on data acquisition and product information. " Expert knowledge and understanding in developing product configurations with use of product structures through reuse of previously designed product configurations. " Demonstrated experience and thorough understanding of CMII out of the box (OOTB) processes provided in PDMLink for change control. " Advanced understanding and experience in creating, modifying, and maintaining Workflows and Lifecycles for PLM of weapons product definition. " Proven experience in installing, configuring, and deploying Parametric Technology Corporations PTCs FAST index search engine. " Demonstrated experience with federation of PDMLink systems and synchronization of data between PDMLink systems. " Experience with PDMLink SQA testing and software management. " Demonstrated experience installing and configuring the Pro/Engineer CAD publisher for PDMLink. " XML authoring applications, specifically Arbortext: Experience with the use of Arbortext with Weapons Product Definition data including Engineering Authorizations, Hazard Analysis Reports and surveillance data. Experience with Arbortext xml data management in PDMLink. " Application of science or engineering to nuclear weapons components: Fundamental knowledge of nuclear weapons and the U.S. stockpile. Proven record of commitment to promoting objectives in area such as safety, quality, security, environment, health, diversity, etc. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers. Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks under strict deadlines and changing priorities. Demonstrated experience working with and protecting sensitive information and classified matter. Proven record of team building and conflict resolution. The ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance which normally requires US citizenship. Desired Skills: Supervisory experience with a record of building collaboration and getting results highly desired. Education Requirements: BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Summary

Responsible for a broad set of activities within one or more engineering disciplines in support of engineering research and development (R&D), which is defined as the creative application of scientific principles to research, design, or develop structures, instruments, machines, experiments, processes, theories or technologies; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under ambiguous operating conditions. Broad professional expertise in an engineering discipline and the ability to act as an independently functioning skilled contributor is required.

Job Duties

  1. Safety and security are primary responsibilities for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training and assures compliance; makes safety and security an integral part of every task. Takes steps to stop work if unsafe conditions exist or security is compromised.

  5. Develops a technical approach, using creativity in applying standard practices and procedures, and leads technical decisions, including selections of technical alternatives, for assigned work.
  6. Develops new methods, techniques or approaches to address critical technical problems. Develops new technical capabilities.
  7. Develops technical products such as journal papers and reports. Contributes to the development of intellectual property leading to publications, copyrights, and/or patents.
  8. Contributes to the completion of milestones on multiple projects. Contributes to the achievement of programmatic objectives.
  9. Sets direction and goals for well-defined tasks involving more than one person. Scopes tasks within a project and defines deliverables at task level. Leads specific project tasks to meet scope, schedule and budget.
  10. Actively participates in professional societies, National Nuclear Security Administration/Department of Energy Complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external special interest groups. May participate in external working groups and/or assist in organizing meetings and colloquia.
  11. Provides peer review of the work of others across organizations or disciplines.
  12. Mentors junior staff and peers in technical and professional growth. May mentor students and/or post-docs.
  13. Maintains state-of-the-art technical expertise and knowledge within discipline, and develops new skills in related disciplines. Attains additional certifications and/or qualifications to grow in field, which may include more advanced educational degrees and/or a professional engineer license.
  14. Models a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment and that supports cooperation, teamwork, and resource sharing.

Job Knowledge

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in one or more of the following engineering disciplines:  aerospace, biomedical, chemical, computational, electrical, mechanical, nuclear or other R&D engineering field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in designing, planning, and executing research and development projects. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with application of the scientific method and with discipline-relevant standards for the ethical conduct of research.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory policies affecting research and development activities, projects, and/or initiatives.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy, practice, and/or procedure.

Education

  • Typical educational requirement is a bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.

Direction

A. Supervision Received

  • Receives occasional oversight on specific objectives, as well as on complex problems and solutions. Completed work products are subject to supervisory review.

B. Supervision Exercised

  • Provides technical coordination and/or guidance to junior staff, including post-docs, and peers, as needed.

C. Contacts

  • Position typically requires effective networking with peers across the division and/or the Laboratory. May have limited independent interactions with peers, organizations, and/or sponsors external to the Laboratory.
