Position Overview

The successful applicant will work as an engineer within the Engineering Services Division and will be a member of an engineering team deployed to a facility at the Laboratory. This position provides the following engineering services: configuration management support; implementation of the authorization basis; technical baseline maintenance; monitoring, tracking, and trending of major systems; definition of maintenance requirements; troubleshooting; root cause analysis; preparation of detailed corrective maintenance instructions for complex or critical operations; preparation of engineered equivalency analysis; provides field implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program.

Key Position Requirements

Demonstrated technical experience in design engineering, system engineering, or operations at a nuclear or industrial facility; demonstrated experience applying engineering practices and principles. Demonstrated experience in engineering including controls, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance. Demonstrated working knowledge of DOE standards applicable to facility design, operation, and maintenance is preferred. Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally; proficiency with personal computers. Demonstrated experience working with industry standards. Associate degree in technology field. BS degree preferred.

Summary

Uses the principles and theories of engineering, math and science to solve technical problems within discipline in support of engineering and engineering research.  Supports engineering/projects in the performance of complex and demanding assignments requiring initiative and independent judgment. Responsible for assigned activities within an engineering discipline in support of facilities, design, operation, maintenance, project and/or research-based engineering. May provide direction to technicians. Able to work independently and as part of a team.  Utilizes engineering and computer technology to accomplish work. Continuously improves work processes to meet customer needs.

Job Duties

  1. Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees.   2. (LC) Uses and applies principles, theories, concepts and techniques within discipline and of other related fields to perform work.
  3. (LC) Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways. Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
  4. (LC) Contributes to the development of organization’s goals and objectives.
  5. (LC) Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Determines approach to solutions, plans, schedules and arranges own activities in accomplishing objectives.
  6. Supports studies to formulate, determine and evaluate design criteria for structures, system and equipment.
  7. Contributes to the planning, coordination, and preparation of equipment or work specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for equipment.
  8. Applies working knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics and science to solve routine technical problems in area of discipline (Makes complex calculations and performs analyses in support of design engineering).
  9. Performs computer-related activities, such as preparing input data and using computer programs for computerized solution of technical problems, including the use of CAD systems for drawing preparation.
  10. Assists engineers in reviewing and recommending action on client requests for engineering change orders, and obtains the required approvals.
  11. Supports technical research and gathers data needed by engineers in area of discipline. Assist engineers in preparing economic and operating feasibility studies and in performing similar activities aimed at evaluating alternative systems, equipment, materials or engineering methods.
  12. Provide project support. Reviews bid analyses and makes recommendations.
  13. Performs technical research and gathers data needed by engineers to solve technical problems and to recommend actions.
  14. Performs product/system/equipment design, development and/or production processes in area of discipline.
  15. Prepares, reviews and ocuments technical information.
  16. Applies knowledge of analytical and/or scientific software, CAD and CAD/CAM software and industrial control software within area of discipline; and word processing software at a proficient working level.
  17. Provides technical direction to design and drafting personnel in preparation of drawings. May prepare drawings on CAD.
  18. Prepare, review and document technical information.
  19. Adheres to engineering policies, programs, procedures and practices.
  20. Promotes a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CADD modeling and design.
  • Sound knowledge of mathematical formulas and computations and data gathering methods.
  • Working knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities, including design and systems technology, within designated discipline.
  • Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA Complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.

Education

  • Position typically requires an associate's degree in engineering, engineering technology; baccalaureate degree preferred, or years of relevant experience in lieu of degree requirement; and at least 5 years of relevant experience preferred.

Direction

A. Supervision Received

  • Receives technical and operational direction from designated supervisor/manager.

B. Supervision Exercised

  • May provide direction to technicians and/or administrative staff, as directed.

C. Contacts

  • Regular contact with other engineering technologists, engineers, facility personnel and technicians.
