Summary

Responsible for assigned activities within an engineering discipline in support of facility design, operation and maintenance. Applies broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of complex engineering analyses. Performs all aspects of work in engineering operations within discipline. Performs conventional structural design and analysis. Provides system integration within and across disciplines. Provides construction and project support. May provide direction to technicians. Able to work independently and as part of a team, utilizes engineering technology to accomplish work. Continuously improves work processes to meet customer needs.

Job Duties

1. Safety and security are primary responsibilities for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training and assures compliance; makes safety and security an integral part of every task. Takes steps to stop work if unsafe conditions exist or security is compromised.
2. Adheres to engineering policies, programs, procedures and practices.
3. Researches, assembles, and/or evaluates information or data regarding industry practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting engineering policies or programs; recommends sound, practical solutions to complex issues.
4. Demonstrates full understanding of specialized area, plus working knowledge of other related fields.
5. Applies standard engineering principles, theories, concepts and techniques within discipline to resolve a wide range of issues in a creative way.
6. Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
7. Performs conventional structural design and analysis.
8. Contributes to the development of organizational goals and objectives.
9. Works under limited direction; receives general instruction on new assignments. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
10. Determines approaches to solutions, plans schedule and arranges own activities in accomplishing objectives.
11. Performs design, installation and commissioning of commercial, industrial and safety-related systems.
12. Utilizes engineering technology tools including CAD, CNC, CAE, etc., programs and develops software tools at varying levels of complexity.
13. Assists with process and instrumentations control.
14. Prepares documents, studies, and reports associated with facility lifecycles and space requirements as directed.
15. Provides conventional and innovative engineering construction and project support.
16. Performs demand and planned maintenance and performs predictive maintenance.
17. Work is evaluated on completion to ensure objectives have been met.
18. Promotes a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

• Sound knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.
• Sound knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
• Sound knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
• Knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
• Working knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
• Sound knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
• Working knowledge of project and process engineering practices.

Education

• Position typically requires a baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college or university and, practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.

Direction

A. Supervision Received

• Receives minimal supervision and technical guidance from a project engineer, senior engineering supervisor, or chief engineer.
• Work is reviewed to ensure objectives are met.

B. Supervision Exercised

• May direct the work of technicians, drafters, etc.
