Position Overview

The Weapons Engineering Technology (WT) Division provides technical expertise to the Weapons System (W) Division, Applied Physics (X) Division, the Hydrodynamic Experiments (HX) Division, the Hydrodynamics Test Program, and the Dynamic Plutonium Experiments (DPE) Program in accomplishing the Laboratory¿s Nuclear Weapon¿s mission. Specifically, WT Division provides engineering and technological expertise and support for weapon systems and integrated experiments through: design and assembly of hydrodynamic and sub-critical experiments and ancillary hardware; environmental testing and advanced diagnostics; HE processing and manufacturing; polymer materials engineering; design, analysis, and testing of blast-loaded structures including small and large scale blast-loaded containment and confinement vessels; Nevada Test Site Engineering and Operations; and Tritium Science and Engineering. The Weapons Test Engineering Group (WT-7) provides the Nuclear Weapons Program with precision engineering design, analysis, testing, and advanced diagnostic development for the weapon systems and the integrated experiments portfolio at Los Alamos. This position involves detailed engineering design, analysis, fabrication interface, acceptance testing, and final installation/fielding of precision engineered components and systems. The engineering designs can range from basic experiment support stands to blast-loaded containment vessels requiring a higher level of engineering rigor. Additionally, the work involves requirements definition and interface management working with personnel from varied disciplines and backgrounds.

Key Position Requirements

Required Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Demonstrated performance in detailed mechanical design, analysis, fabrication liaison, testing, and successful commissioning of hardware is required. Working knowledge of an engineering finite element code (e.g., Algor, Cosmos/M, Abaqus, LS-Dyna) is needed, along with the ability to perform detailed closed-form calculations for initial design scoping. The ability to provide technical leadership in the creation of detailed fabrication drawing packages, specifications, procedures, and checklists is required. The fabrication liaison effort requires having a working knowledge of basic fabrication processes including machining, welding, and inspection. The successful candidate must possess the ability to establish, manage, and report scope, schedule, and budget for small projects to team members, line managers, and program managers, as required. The ability to successfully interact with technical and project coordination teams from varied disciplines and backgrounds is also essential. Excellent written and oral skills are required. The ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance which normally requires US Citizenship. Desired Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Experience in performing non-linear analysis of engineering components or systems undergoing high-strain rate loading (e.g., blast loading) is beneficial. In-depth knowledge of typical design and material standards such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME B&PV), the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM), and American Welding Society (AWS) standards is helpful. Experience in fielding hardware where varied technical interfaces are brought together is advantageous. Project management experience is desired. Knowledge of the basic LANL and Nevada Test Site integrated test capabilities is advantageous. A professional engineering license is desired. Education: MS in Engineering required.
