Position Overview

A skilled and experienced Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator to work in Information Systems and Technology Division's Data Management (IST-IS11) group supporting the activities of one or more of our internal customers. Responsibilities include: Working with systems analysts and developers to design data models needed to meet application requirements; Development and implementation of data structures; Establishing and maintaining security and integrity controls; Defining and implementing operational support procedures including backup and recovery; Performing operational support which includes performance analysis and tuning; Formulating and monitoring policies, procedures and standards relating to database management; and proposing and implementing enhancements that will improve security, performance and reliability. Individual will ensure that databases are implemented and managed in a manner consistent with customer needs, LANL policy, IST Division policies and procedures, and industry best practices in general. Individual may be required to provide after-hours on-call support. Individual will be expected to help other team members and users as required, and keep IST management and customers apprised of project status on a regular basis. Individual will be expected to attend technical conferences and classes, and make an over-all general effort to keep skills current and relevant to our mission.

Key Position Requirements

Demonstrated experience in providing database support for all phases of SQL Server-based development projects. Demonstrated experience working on large teams. Demonstrated experience in planning and designing database architecture for new systems. Demonstrated experience with problem diagnosis and resolution, including the use of Microsoft support. Demonstrated experience with performance monitoring and tuning. Demonstrated experience in patching and addressing security vulnerabilities. Demonstrated experience in the use of standard operating procedures and best practices. Effective time management skills as demonstrated by the ability to work on multiple projects with varying priorities and deadlines. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Position requires Q access authorization. Candidate must have the ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship. Desired Skills: Experience with implementing and managing MS SQL Server 2000 and 2005 databases in Windows 2000/2003 x32 and x64 Server OS environments. Experience with SQL Server Data Transformation Services (DTS), SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and Transact-SQL programming. Experience in architecting and implementing a high availability infrastructure. Experience with the use of Enterprise Manager, SQL Server Management Studio and Maintenance Plan creation. Active DOE Q clearance. B.S. degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline.

Summary

Plans, designs, implements and maintains computerized database management systems throughout entire system lifecycle. Works with systems analysts and developers to design data model needed to meet business requirements. Develops and implements data structures. Performs operational support, which includes performance analysis and tuning. Formulates and monitors policies, procedures and standards relating to database management. Proposes and implements enhancements that will improve the security, performance and reliability.

Has wide-ranging experience, uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. Frequently contributes to the development and/or implementation of new technical standards and methods. Considered an expert in the field. Develops resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Work is accomplished without considerable direction and/or coordinates activities of other personnel. Exerts significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determines the methods and procedures needed for new assignments.

Job Duties

  1. Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training, assures safety and security compliance, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.
  2. Implements and maintains physical design and stable operation of databases.
  3. Responsible for configuration management for the data model and setup of database management systems.
  4. Reviews database design and integration of systems, provides backup recovery and makes recommendations regarding enhancements and/or improvements.
  5. Manages instance environments including cloning and synchronization
  6. Conducts performance tuning of databases.
  7. Manages database resources including individual job resource consumption and overall resource efficiency of job queues and database background processes including workflow.
  8. Maintains security and integrity controls.
  9. Researches, reviews, and applies patches as required.
  10. May provide support for other application layers including application server and web server as appropriate.
  11. May provide support for enterprise integration interfaces and technologies
  12. Serves as third tier production support to solve technical problems
  13. May be required to provide on-call support
  14. Formulates policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management, and monitors transaction activity and utilization.
  15. Reviews project requests describing database needs and develops work estimates.
  16. Works as part of a multidiscipline project team to provide database support
  17. Adheres to policies and programs concerning information technology.
  18. Researches, assembles, and/or evaluates information or data regarding industry practices or applicable regulatory changes affecting information technology policies or programs; recommends sound, practical solutions to complex issues.
  19. Fosters a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

  • Knowledge of, database design, development and management.
  • Knowledge of software development methodologies, tools and processes.
  • Knowledge of host operating system.
  • Ability to translate technical terms to layperson's terms and present them to audiences outside of IS&T.
  • Ability to partner with customers.
  • Ability to review and understand end-to-end work processes.
  • Skill in working closely with customers and suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.

Education

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience. Post-graduate degree and/or professional certification(s) and/or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Direction

A. Supervision Received

  • Receives functional and operational direction from a designated information systems and technology (IS&T) supervisor.

B. Supervision Exercised

  • Monitors work of less experienced personnel as designated.
  • May direct personnel within a discipline on special segments of a project, if assigned.

C. Contacts

  • Works closely with developers and system administrators on design, implementation and operational support and analysis
  • Works with customers and subject matter experts as needed
