Position Overview

The Electrical Design Engineer will report directly to the CMRR Lead Electrical Design Engineer and indirectly to the Core Electrical Team Leader of the Engineering Services Division, Design Engineering (DE) Group. ES division is part of LANL's Engineering and Engineering Sciences Directorate. The Design Engineering (DE) Group provides institutional leadership, processes, and technical resources for safe, high quality, and cost-effective engineering, construction, and operational configuration management in support of LANL operations. The Electrical Design Engineer position is part of a team of engineers responsible primarily for design oversight and review of the CMRR project to ensure that the designs comply with LANL, State, Federal, and U.S. Department of Energy requirements. The successful candidate will serve the role of electrical design engineer subject matter expert. The primary focus of this position is electrical engineering design oversight in the areas of low voltage (480V and below) facility power distribution, lighting, and special systems. The individual will assist the group with application of engineering and technical standards and practices. Specific duties shall include providing system/equipment design oversight and operational technical support, performing/reviewing calculations, generating designs comments, and leading design oversight projects. Responsible for design oversight activities on extremely large complex projects or multiple smaller projects. Responsible for reviewing significant bid summaries, major drawings and staffing estimates and schedules. Additional responsibilities include coordinating assigned engineering work with other project groups and the analysis of plant system/equipment and potential operational deficiencies, definition of facility system design and safety envelope requirements, and review proposed facility designs/modifications for maintainability, operability, and conformance to facility operational and safety requirements.

Key Position Requirements

Demonstrated experience in preparation of Functional and Operational Requirements Documents and Design Requirements Documents. Familiarity with DOE Nuclear Safety Requirements such as DOE O 420.1 in an ASME NQA-1 environment. Demonstrated experience with performance of projects involving facility system designs, process system designs, and other programmatic equipment designs. Demonstrated experience in development of configuration management documents including: installation instructions; Verification, Acceptance, and Testing documents. Demonstrated working knowledge of LANL Engineering Standards. Demonstrated technical experience in non-nuclear facility electrical systems, components, and systems. Demonstrated proficiency in producing electrical engineering analyses and studies, calculations (short-circuit, load, coordination, voltage drop, lighting, arc flash, etc.), specifications, and drawings for facility and process systems. Demonstrated proficiency applying applicable industry codes and standards to facility electrical design. Familiarity in non-reactor nuclear building operations, maintenance, configuration management programs, and ASME NQA-1 quality assurance programs. Ability to manage multiple tasks requiring varying resource needs and deadlines is a must. A team player able to work independently and serve a wide base of customers. Experience in effectively communicating, both verbal and written, with peers, customers, and management. Ability to work effectively with a design/build contractor and numerous LANL organizations. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of LANL Conduct of Engineering procedures within 3 months. Promote the creation of a work environment, supported by leadership, which fosters openness, trust, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction. Experience in design and construction of major non-reactor or reactor nuclear facilities, involving the various operational systems serving them and the associated engineering economics. Experience in working with to multidiscipline design teams and mentoring less experienced engineers. Actual experience as an electrical design engineer with an engineering firm servicing the nuclear industry. Experience in performing electrical load calculations and designs. ICC Certified Electrical Inspector. Industry certifications in the areas of electrical facility engineering design. Active Professional Engineering Licensure and the ability to obtain New Mexico Professional Registration in the electrical discipline. BS (advanced degree preferred) in Electrical Engineering. Degree from an ABET accredited university highly desired.

Summary

Responsible for assigned activities within an engineering discipline in support of facility design, operation and maintenance. Applies broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of complex engineering analyses. Performs all aspects of work in engineering operations within discipline. Performs conventional structural design and analysis. Provides system integration within and across disciplines. Provides construction and project support. May lead projects and supervise the work of others. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Utilizes engineering technology to accomplish work. Leads work process improvement to meet customer needs.

Job Duties

  7. Performs non-conventional structural design and analysis.

  9. Works is accomplished without considerable direction.
  10. Exerts significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determines the methods and procedures needed for new assignments.
  11. Leads the design, installation and commissioning of commercial, industrial and safety-related systems.
  12. Utilizes engineering technology tools including CAD, CNC, CAE, etc., programs and develops software tools to resolve complex issues.
  13. Assists with process and instrumentations control.
  14. Prepares documents, studies, and reports associated with facility life-cycles and space requirements as directed.
  15. Provides conventional and innovative engineering construction and project support.
  16. Establishes demand and planned maintenance and predictive maintenance objectives and schedules.
  17. Work is evaluated on completion to ensure objectives have been met.
  18. Promotes a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

  • Expert knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
  • Broad knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
  • Expert knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Expert knowledge of project and process engineering practices.

Education

  • Position typically requires a baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college or university and, practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
