Ronald O. Valdiserri, MD, MPH
Chief Consultant, Public Health Strategic Health
Care Group
Dr Valdiserri joined the VA
September 5, 2006 as the Chief Consultant, Public
Health Strategic Health Care Group. He directs VA programs that relate to public health
policies across the VA health care system. His work
involves collaborations within and outside of
VA, evaluation of VA public health practices and
programs, and development and analysis of population
databases for public health quality improvement
activities as well as to enable both local and
national staff to have relevant information on
patient populations, and foster and disseminate best
practices in several areas that have a high impact
on VA and the nation such as HIV, hepatitis C,
smoking, the public health aspects of emerging
infectious diseases, among other responsibilities.
Dr. Valdiserri has been the Deputy
Director, National Center for HIV, STD, and TB
Prevention, of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) since 1996. He joined the CDC in
1989 as Director, Division of Laboratory Services in
the Public Health Practice Program Office, later
serving as Deputy Director for HIV in the National
Center for Prevention Services, and Deputy Director
of the Division of HIV/AIDS and TB Prevention. From
1988 to 1991 he was on the faculty of the University
of Pittsburgh Schools of Medicine and of Public
Health. He has a BA in biology from Washington and
Jefferson College, an MD from West Virginia
University, and an MPH from the University of
Pittsburgh. He has authored or co-authored almost
170 publications, including journal articles,
invited papers, reviews, monographs, books, and book
chapters. Dr. Valdiserri received the Secretary of
Health and Human Services Award for Distinguished
Service in 1995 and 2002 and was nominated in 2005
for the CDC’s Lifetime Scientific Achievement Award.
