Purpose

The purpose of this program is to support the implementation of public education and outreach programs that show promise of increasing organ donation. Specifically, this program supports the replication of strategies that have been identified through the research grant program of the Division of Transplantation as effective in increasing donation or strategies identified in the public health literature as being effective in modifying health behavior. The program also supports the implementation of public education and outreach efforts that are based on an established framework for successful public health outreach programs. This grant program is supportive of the Division mission to educate the public about deceased and or living donation and to encourage individuals to document their decision to be a donor in their statewide donor registry or by some other mechanism where a registry is unavailable.

	Eligible applicants include Federally-designated organ procurement organizations (OPOs) and other non-profit private or public entities eligible for funds under Section 377A(b) of the Public Health Service (PHS) Act, 42 U.S.C. Section 274f-1(b). State and local governments, Indian Tribal Governments, institutions of higher education, faith-based and community organizations, Tribal organizations, and other non profit organizations are eligible to apply for these grants. For profit organizations may participate in a grant project as a subcontractor or consortium member, but are not eligible to apply as the applicant institution. As specified in Section 377A(b) of the PHS Act, the Secretary may make peer-reviewed grants to public and nonprofit private entities, including Tribes, Tribal Organizations, faith-based and community based organizations. This program has one funding priority of five points for applications that meet the criteria set forth in the guidance related to a consortium of organizations.
