NYPA Donates Funds To Staten Island Zoo

STATEN ISLAND—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) announced today the donation of $1,500 to the Staten Island Zoo to continue enhancement of the Zoo’s educational programs.

“This funding will allow the Staten Island Zoo to expand its educational programs for young people.  It will help teach young people about the importance of energy efficiency and how they can help conserve energy,” said Congressman Vito Fossella (R-NY13).

“Building on the Power Authority’s partnership with the Staten Island Zoo, to promote energy efficiency and education, we are adding under Governor George E. Pataki’s leadership, $1,500 for improving education programming to past donations of a clean, electric TH!NK neighbor vehicle and $1,000 in education funding,” said Eugene W. Zeltmann, president and chief executive officer, NYPA.

“Working with the Power Authority and Governor Pataki enables the Staten Island Zoo to offer top-quality education programs for better informed visitors and to also be energy conscious with a zero emissions electric vehicle to perform many zoo tasks for cleaner air that both our visitors and animals appreciate,” said John Caltabiano, executive director, Staten Island Zoo.

The Staten Island Zoo, owned by the City of New York and operated under the auspices of the Department of Cultural Affairs, receives, like all City-owned facilities including schools, police and fire stations and hospitals on Staten Island, low-cost power from the Power Authority.  The Staten Island Zoological Society, a not-for-profit organization which owns and manages the collection, has more than 400 animals inhabiting an aquarium, serpentarium, tropical forest and African savannah exhibits.
