CFO Academy Launches September 22, 2008

After months of planning, the Federal government’s new CFO Academy opened its doors on September 22. Tina W. Jonas, Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller), delivered the keynote address at a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on the campus of the National Defense University (NDU), where the Information Resources Management (IRM) College will host the new program (click for keynote address).

The CFO Academy was established with the endorsement of the Federal CFO Council and the sponsorship of Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) Tina Jonas. The Academy will fill a critical need, to prepare the most promising members of the federal financial management community for strategic leadership roles in the 21st century.

The academy’s first product, the CFO Leadership Certificate program, is composed of eight graduate-level courses designed to enhance the leadership skills of the next generation of CFOs and government strategic leaders. The students earn graduate credits they will be able to apply to selected master’s and doctoral degree programs offered by accredited partner universities. (New partnerships are under development.) Strategic finance may also become a specialty in a proposed IRM College Government Strategic Leader Master of Science degree program.

The National Defense University (NDU) -- home to the IRM College and the CFO Academy – is the nation’s premier center for joint professional military education and national security education. NDU is an accredited graduate-level institution that prepares military and civilian leaders from the U.S. and other countries to evaluate national and international security challenges through multi-disciplinary educational and research programs, professional exchanges, and outreach. As a key component in NDU, the IRM College prepares leaders to direct the information component of national power.

Government employees who are interested in the CFO Academy and its programs are encouraged to apply. There is no tuition charged to DoD employees. For more information or application materials, call 202-685-6300 or visit the CFO website at http://www.ndu.edu/irmc/pcs_cfo.htm.
