Computers From Power Authority Aid Packard Court School Programs Contact: February 14, 2008 NIAGARA FALLS—Schoolchildren participating in programs at the Niagara Falls Housing Authority’s Packard Court Community Center have the use of four computers courtesy of the New York Power Authority (NYPA). New York State Senator Antoine Thompson requested the surplus reconditioned computers as part of his literacy push. “It’s good for the kids to have access to computers at an early age to help promote reading,” Senator Thompson said. “We thank the Power Authority for this program.” “The computers have provided such a boost,” Khaleelah F. Shareef, the center’s director, said. “The children love them. They are the first thing they visit once they sign in at the center. Some of them don’t have computers at home so this provides important access.” "The Power Authority is delighted to have provided these computers for this very worthy purpose," said Horace Horton, NYPA’s regional manager for Western New York. "The donation is in line with NYPA's desire to be a good neighbor in the area of our Niagara Power Project." The center offers a free Universal Pre-Kindergarten program through a grant provided by the Niagara Falls Board of Education and after-school “I Can Read” and homework assistance programs for students ages 5 through 18.
