Jana Murphy was named the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Chief of Staff by Acting FAA Administrator Bobby Sturgell in December of 2007. In her position, Ms. Murphy is a key advisor to the Administrator and the Deputy Administrator in the day-to-day administration and management of the agency.

Ms. Murphy comes to FAA from the Department of Transportation's (DOT) Office of the Secretary where she served as Assistant to the Secretary for Policy. At DOT, she worked as a key advisor to the Secretary on the rollout of The Next Generation Air Transportation Financing Reform Act of 2007 and the broadening of Open Skies agreements with China and the European Union.

Before joining DOT, Ms. Murphy worked on Capitol Hill where she was Policy Director to Congressman Robin Hayes of North Carolina, a general aviation pilot and senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. From 2001-2007, she covered a broad range of transportation issues including highways, railroads and water infrastructure. Additionally, she coordinated the Congressman's appropriations and policy strategies in Washington and strategic outreach in the congressional district.

Prior to her federal service, Ms. Murphy began her career in teaching, serving in Fairfax County and King George County Schools in innovative, elementary multiage programs. She served on the Superintendent's Advisory Council, several grant writing teams, and managed the daily affairs of sixty 5-7 year old students — her most challenging assignment yet.

Ms. Murphy holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in May 1996. She currently serves on the Board of the Women's Congressional Golf Association and is recently married to John P. Murphy of Baltimore, Maryland.
