ArrowOptical Microscopy

Web-based Education

This department runs four microscopy Web sites that together comprise some 20,000 HTML pages and receive more than 50,000 unique visitors a day from throughout the world. In addition, the programers, designers artists and writers from this group provide considerable content and support to the Mag Lab's Web site.

Molecular Expressions
This site features articles, Java tutorials, charts and diagrams on a wide range of topics in light microscopy. It is the largest compendium of microscopy education available anywhere, featuring one of the Web's largest collections of color photomicrographs (photographs taken through an optical microscope).

MicroscopyU
This site, designed for Nikon, provides an educational forum for all aspects of optical microscopy, digital imaging and photomicrography. The site includes the latest state-of-the-art information in microscope optics and imaging technology, including specialized techniques such as fluorescence, differential interference contrast (DIC), phase contrast, reflected light microscopy and microscopy of living cells.

Microscopy Resource Center
This Olympus-sponsored educational site offers sections on the physics of light and color, the anatomy of a microscope, specialized microscopy techniques and other content.

Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy
Also designed for Olympus, this site explores confocal microscopy, a technique that offers numerous advantages over conventional widefield optical microscopy and has grown in popularity in recent years. The site boasts the largest library of confocal fluorescence videos in the world.

Research

In addition to educational Web sites devoted to optical microscopy, this group conducts research in the field in its own labs and produces highly regarded photomicrographs.
