HHS Awards Grants Worth $9.2 Million to Improve the Health of America’s Children
HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced awards totaling almost $9.2 million in grants and a cooperative agreement to improve health care services for children and to support maternal and child health (MCH) research.
“Improving health care for children now will make America stronger in the future,” Secretary Leavitt said. “Funds from these grant programs expand access to important services that will help our young people grow into healthy adults.”
Fifty-three State MCH Early Childhood Comprehensive Systems Program grants totaling $6,585,000 will help state health departments promote integrated, community-based systems of care that ease children’s access to social and mental health services.
Grants to eight academic and institutions from HRSA’s Extramural MCH Research Program totaling $1,606,867 will examine several issues, including: access to care among children of immigrants; dental care for low-income women in Oregon; prenatal case management by registered nurses for high-risk, low-income pregnant women; and ways to measure the quality of care in hospital neonatal units.
State Agency Partnerships for Promoting Child and Adolescent Mental Health Program grants totaling $319,059 were awarded to four state health departments to help develop partnerships with other state health care, health care financing, justice, and education agencies to coordinate mental health services for school-aged children and teens.
Additionally, a Partnership for State Leadership in Oral Health grant totaling $400,000 went to the Association for State and Territorial Health Officials in Jefferson City, Mo., to support partnerships among state oral health programs, and Medicaid and private sector providers to increase access to oral health services for mothers and children.
And the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, based in Washington, D.C., signed a cooperative agreement worth $250,000 to coordinate research in practices health care providers use in pregnancy care to reduce low birth weight and preterm birth.
