HRSA's Mitchell Is Honored by APhA

Jimmy R. Mitchell, RPh, MPH, MS, director of HRSA’s Office of Pharmacy Affairs, has received the 2005 Distinguished Achievement Award in Administrative Practice from the American Pharmacists Association (APhA).

The award, presented today at APhA’s annual meeting in Orlando, recognizes the achievements of an individual who has made a significant contribution or sustained contributions to the provision of pharmaceutical care within administrative practice.

Mitchell has headed HRSA’s Office of Pharmacy Affairs since 1997.  The mission of the office is to increase access to pharmacy services by safety-net medical providers that participate in the 340B drug pricing program, which the office administers.  Approximately 12,000 outpatient clinics and disproportionate share hospitals buy over $3 billion annually in discounted drugs through the program.  Mitchell also has directed several HRSA pharmacy initiatives, including the Prime Vendor Program, clinical pharmacy demonstration grants, Alternative Methods Demonstration projects and, through a contract with APhA, the Pharmacy Services Support Center.

Mitchell is a 1964 graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy.  He earned a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University in 1972 and a master’s degree in science in 1994 from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C.

Founded in 1852, the APhA is the first-established and largest professional association of pharmacists in the United States, representing more than 52,000 pharmacists, scientists, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
