HHS Announces $20.4 Million to Promote Poison Control
HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has announced $20.4 million in grants to help improve services at the nation's Poison Control Centers.
The grants are awarded under HRSA's Poison Control Stabilization and Enhancement Program within the Healthcare Systems Bureau. Fifty-five centers are receiving stabilization/certification grants to help improve services related to education, prevention and treatment and also to assist uncertified centers become certified. Nine additional incentive grants are being awarded to centers to strengthen their operational infrastructure, improve their ability to access high-quality services, and promote poison prevention education and outreach to high-risk and underserved populations.
In addition to helping poison centers across the country and in the District of Columbia, Guam, the Federated States of Micronesia and American Samoa, HRSA provides technical assistance to support strategic planning, collaboration, data collection, media promotion, education outreach and financial stability activities.
HRSA also supports a single, national toll-free number (1-800-222-1222) to ensure universal access to center services. Multilingual phone service is also available in the 61 centers across the country, providing interpreter services in 161 languages. Over 70 percent of poisoning exposures can be treated over the phone with guidance from a center's trained healthcare professionals, who include nurses, pharmacists and certified specialists in poison information.
A national media campaign, The Poison Help Campaign, has been launched to educate the public about poisoning risks, expand awareness of the national toll-free hotline, and increase awareness of the national network of centers and the services they provide.
Each year, more than 2.4 million poison exposures are reported to the nation's poison control centers. Unintentional poisoning deaths rank second in deaths caused by injury for people between 35 and 54 and third in deaths caused by injury for people between 25 and 34. More than half (52 percent) of poisonings occur to children younger than 5, and approximately 90 percent of poisonings occur in the home.
