HHS Awards $22 Million for Early Treatment of HIV/AIDS

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt today announced $22 million in grants for early intervention HIV/AIDS care and services to medically underserved populations.

Fifty-three community-based health centers, migrant health centers, hospitals, and other entities in 23 states and Puerto Rico will receive early intervention services grants under Part C of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. The grants support ongoing medical, oral health, nutritional, psychosocial, and other treatment for HIV-positive individuals; laboratory, x-ray and other diagnostic tests; and medical case management to help patients access care and remain in treatment.

“With these funds, we can help health care organizations across the country deliver timely, critical HIV/AIDS care and services in rural and other medically underserved communities,” said Secretary Leavitt.

Following reauthorization of the Ryan White Program last December, Part C grantees are required to spend at least 50 percent of their grants on early intervention services and at least 75 percent on newly defined core medical services. Because early intervention services are included under the definition of core medical services, the early intervention expenditures can be counted toward the broader requirement to spend 75 percent of funds for core services.

Earlier FY 2007 Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program awards were announced for Part A formula grants; additional Part A formula awards; supplemental Part A awards; Part B grants to states and territories; and a prior round of Part C grants.

HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration oversees the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, which provides life-saving care and services to more than 530,000 individuals every year. For more information, visit http://hab.hrsa.gov/.
