HRSA Awards $8.8 Million to Support Clinicians in Medically Underserved Areas

HRSA Administrator Elizabeth M. Duke today announced $8.8 million in grants to increase the number of primary care clinicians serving in federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) and to improve behavioral health services for the medically underserved.

Twenty-four awards worth $7 million under HRSA's Grants to States for Loan Repayment Program will help state health departments and other state entities administer loan repayment programs to support primary care providers who serve in HPSAs. Federal dollars generally provide up to 50 percent of program funds; states or communities match the federal contribution and may contribute more. In FY 2006, 622 clinicians representing 11 health care disciplines were supported through the program, created in 1987 (Section 338I of the Public Health Service Act). Full-time primary care health providers in public or non-profit facilities located in HPSAs can apply.

In addition, 18 awards under the Graduate Psychology Education Program totaling $1.8 million went to universities and medical institutions to train psychologists in behavioral and mental health to work with individuals and families in medically underserved areas. The program focuses on an integrated approach to health care services.

These grant programs are administered by HRSA's Bureau of Health Professions.
