(08/13/2007) The NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE CORPS ANNUAL SCHOLARS
ORIENTATION CONFERENCE was held August 9-11, 2007 at the Tampa Marriott
Waterside Hotel, Tampa, Florida.
(04/16/2007) 2007 NHSC Awards of Excellence Entry forms
were mailed. The Award recognized the collaborative
efforts of clinic administrators, clinicians, support staff, and
the communities who have worked tirelessly to improve the health
of our Nation’s underserved. The Awards of Excellence is self-nominating.
Therefore, you may nominate your site by completing the entry form.
The winners in each of the three budget categories will receive
a framed certificate, be featured in NHSC newsletters and on the
website, and be supplied with award recognition stickers that may
be placed on mailings, documents, and promotional material. The
winners will be announced after July 2007.
This Award is our way of recognizing the dedication and hard work
of NHSC sites and clinicians towards improving the health of the
underserved in your community. We hope you will consider nominating

12-15, 2006 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner, McLean, VA.

National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is pleased to announce the

excellence in the provision of comprehensive and competent primary
health care and recognizes the combined efforts among site administrators,
clinicians, and communities to improve the health of the Nation’s

Access Today for Healthier Communities Tomorrow” was held in
Reston, VA, August 10-13, 2006.
(02/23/2006) State Primary Care Office Annual Meeting was held
on March 20-22, 2006. The meeting was organized by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services
Administration, Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr). The BHPr Shortage
Designation Branch (SDB) and Division of the National Health Service
Corps (DNHSC) coordinated the meeting which covered various policies,
procedures and program updates impacting State Primary Care Offices
(PCO). The State PCO Annual meeting was held at the Hyatt Dulles
in Herndon, Virginia.
(02/16/2006) Preparing for the Challenge: Life During Residency
Conference to be held May 12-13, 2006 at the Bethesda Marriott
Pooks Hill in Bethesda, Maryland designed exclusively for NHSC physician
Scholars graduating from medical school and preparing to enter the
next phase of their training in residency. Participants will learn
strategies and gain tools that will enhance their experience in
preparation for the realities of successful practice as a National
Health Service Corps Clinician serving the underserved. Participation
is strongly encouraged in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Certified Nurse-Midwives Attentive to Mothers in Iowa and Illinois
The Maternal Health Center (MHC) of Bettendorf, Iowa, cares for women and infants, regardless of their ability to pay. It serves the Quad City area of Bettendorf and Davenport on the Iowa side and Moline and Rock Island on the Illinois side. The center relies heavily on the skills of its certified nurse-midwives (C.N.M.s) to provide personalized attention and care.
