America's Health Care Hereos

WHAT YOU CAN DO

If you are a public health professional, community leader, NHSC member, or just an interested member of a community facing barriers to mental health care, you may be able to participate in your state’s efforts. Many of the state delegations in attendance left the summit with action committees already formed and ready to get to work.

If you have a desire to help your state or community in its efforts to expand access to mental health care and integrate behavioral health with primary care, here are some suggestions on where to go next:

  • Contact your state’s Primary Care Organization (PCA) or Primary Care Association (PCA) to find out if they were represented at the summit. They are likely to be instrumental participants on action committees, and even if they were not at the summit, they will be well positioned to connect you with resources in your state or community that are addressing mental health and primary care issues.
  • If you are near a university with medical and health professions programs, consult with them to learn about their involvement with the summits. NHSC Ambassadors are an on-campus resource for issues related to access to primary care and serving the underserved. They may also have ideas to share.
  • Stay informed as results are reported by checking in with the NHSC Web site, or by registering for one of our electronic newsletters, if you are not already receiving one. Information on our newsletters and how to subscribe can be found on our Publications page.
