HRSA Awards $9.1 Million for HIV/AIDS Dental Care

HRSA Administrator Elizabeth M. Duke today announced $9.1 million in funding to hospitals and dental schools that provide oral health care to HIV-positive patients.

The 68 awards will be used to reimburse dental and dental hygiene education programs for costs incurred in treating patients with HIV infection. The awards are funded under the HIV/AIDS Dental Reimbursement Program of the Ryan White CARE Act, which was enacted in 1990 to improve care and services for low-income and uninsured and underinsured people living with HIV/AIDS. More than 530,000 individuals receive CARE Act-supported treatment and services every year.

“These awards help reinforce the importance of good oral health and treatment, especially for people living with HIV/AIDS who often have no other source of dental care,” said Duke. HRSA, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, oversees the program.

In 2006, Dental Reimbursement programs reported caring for more than 34,000 patients living with HIV, and dental and dental hygiene students and post-doctoral residents provided more than 408,000 hours of direct clinical oral health services to these patients. The programs also reported that 52 percent of patients served reported household income at or below the Federal Poverty Level, and almost half of patients served had no other source of payment for oral health care.

Since the CARE Act was first funded in FY 1991, HRSA has awarded more than $115.5 million to support Dental Reimbursement programs.

A list of awards is attached.
