FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WHITE PLAINS—The newest trustee of the New York Power Authority (NYPA), D. Patrick Curley of the Town of Orchard Park, will participate in his first NYPA board meeting on Oct. 30 after being confirmed Monday by the New York State Senate to a five-year term following his nomination by Gov. Eliot Spitzer in August.

A lifetime resident of Western New York, Curley is president and founder of St. Lawrence Business Consultants, a financial consulting firm with clients in banking, manufacturing, education and various other interests in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. His specialties have included economic development, business combinations, evaluation of privately held corporations and governmental advocacy.  He has also taught courses in statistics, accounting and business valuation techniques at D’Youville and Canisius Colleges in Buffalo, and has held leadership positions in local government and charitable organizations.

“I’m looking forward to working closely with Pat and drawing upon his more than 30 years of experience as a financial consultant to organizations extending to wide areas of the economy,” said Frank S. McCullough Jr., NYPA chairman. “He comes to NYPA with an appreciation of the significant role our organization plays in benefiting the state’s electric power system, economy and environment, and is sure to make a significant contribution to the oversight of our statewide organization.”

“The Power Authority is going to play an important part in supporting Governor Spitzer’s ambitious goals for enhancing the state’s energy efficiency and helping to ensure sufficient supplies of economical and clean power for meeting increased demand and fortifying the electric power system,” said Roger B. Kelley, NYPA president and chief executive officer. “Our trustees’ leadership will be integral to these efforts, and Pat certainly has the credentials in finance and other relevant areas to help guide NYPA in meeting the challenges that lie ahead.”

“It’s going to be a privilege to work with Chairman McCullough and Roger Kelley and the Power Authority’s top-notch team of professionals,” said Curley. “I’m honored by the confidence Governor Spitzer has shown in nominating me to the NYPA board and am looking forward to helping the Power Authority carry out his significant statewide energy policy goals. They include lowering electricity costs and cutting demand for power by 15 percent below the forecasted level by 2015 through stepped-up energy-efficiency efforts.”

Over the years, Curley has worked on behalf of various Western New York businesses qualifying for allocations of low-cost hydropower from NYPA’s Niagara Power Project. Some 44,000 jobs in the Buffalo-Niagara region are linked to allocations from the project.

The seven-member NYPA Board of Trustees oversees the Power Authority’s senior management under New York State law. The trustees’ duties include, but are not limited to, reviewing and monitoring financial, management and operational decisions in connection with NYPA’s statewide generating and transmission facilities and various energy-related services.

Curley, who will not receive a salary as a NYPA trustee, founded St. Lawrence Business Consultants in 1977. Prior to that, he served as an assistant vice president for finance at a Fortune 100 company and as a corporate loan officer for Marine Midland Bank, now HSBC.

He has conducted more than 100 management seminars throughout the United States and was the featured speaker at the 1999 Annual Meeting of the New York State Economic Development Council.

He has served on the boards of a number of corporations and is a member of the Industry Trade Advisory Committee, a high-security, public-private partnership jointly managed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Office of the United States Trade Representative that engages business leaders in formulating U.S. trade policy.

He served three terms on the Orchard Park Town Board, from 1980 to 1991. He currently chairs the Board of Trustees of Erie County Central Police Services, an administrative criminal justice agency, and has been a member of the Orchard Park Fire Company for nearly 40 years.

Curley is the founder of the Orchard Park Council of the Arts and has been a member of the National Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, which named him Volunteer of the Year in 1983 and later presented him with the prestigious Sindelar Award for Outstanding Leadership in Administration and Finance. In 1998, the Orchard Park Chamber of Commerce honored him as its Citizen of the Year. He also has served on the board of Mercy Hospital of Buffalo and on the President’s Council of D’Youville College.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Boston College and a Master of Science Degree from Canisius College.

Curley and his wife, Carolyn, a mathematics professor at Erie Community College and published author, have three grown children.
