October Issue of Inside HRSA

The October issue of Inside HRSA highlights a visit by President Pedro Pires of the African nation of Cape Verde to a health center in Brockton, Mass. It also examines a growing federal initiative to encourage universal substance abuse screening, an effort that will impact treatment offered by HRSA grantees.

Other stories examine the participation by two HRSA employees in a “house build” featured on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, new library services available to HRSA employees through a partnership with FDA, and a new Internet tool that makes it easier for health professionals to find job opportunities in National Health Service Corps-eligible facilities. And don’t forget, it’s that time of the year: the Combined Federal Campaign is now underway!

As with every issue, Inside HRSA lets you know who’s new where in our “On the Move” section and gives you a snapshot of current news and events. Inside HRSA is posted on the HRSA News Room. The next issue will cover November and December; look for it in early December. We will return to month-by-month issues in January 2009.

October Program in Focus

The HRSA Poison Control Program was authorized in 2003 to support the enhancement and improvement of poison education, prevention, and treatment. The program provides technical assistance to Poison Control Centers to support strategic planning, collaboration, data collection, media promotion and education outreach activities. In addition, the Program authorizes funding for a national toll-free number (1-800-222-1222) to ensure universal access to Poison Control Centers services. TThis number connects callers with the Poison Control Center in their area. You can learn more about the program by visiting http://www.hrsa.gov/poisoncontrol/.
