Registration Period to End Nov. 17 For Hurricane Floyd Disaster Assistance

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Residents of eight southeastern Pennsylvania counties who suffered losses as a result of severe weather and flooding caused by Hurricane Floyd in September have until Nov. 17 to apply for state and federal disaster aid.
"We've had more than 14,000 applicants requesting assistance," said Jack Schuback, federal coordinating officer for the Pennsylvania disaster-recovery effort. "However, there may be people who need help and have not applied. We'd like to reach every eligible disaster victim."
President Clinton's major disaster declaration on Sept. 18 covered Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Montgomery, Philadelphia and York counties. Berks County was added on Oct. 13.
Schuback urged residents of those counties who suffered damages or losses as a result of Hurricane Floyd to begin the process by calling the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) toll-free registration number, 1-800-462-9029. Speech- and hearing-impaired applicants can call 1-800-462-7585 (TTY).
Federal and state officials report nearly $20 million has been disbursed to Pennsylvanians affected by Hurricane Floyd in the form of grants for housing assistance and other serious disaster-related needs, and as U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest loans for homeowners, renters and businesses.
"If you already have applied and have questions about your application, you can call the FEMA Helpline for information, even after the deadline has passed," Schuback said. The Helpline number is 1-800-525-0321. The number for speech- and hearing-impaired applicants is 1-800-462-7585 (TTY).
