THOMASVILLE, Ga. -- The Federal and State Disaster Recovery Center that has been open on the fourth floor of the Camilla City Hall will close at the end of the business day at 7PM on Friday. The center will be open until then from 8AM to 7PM daily. Disaster Recovery officials say that the decline in the number of disaster aid applications and the dropoff in the number of people visiting the center make this closure possible. To date, over 700 people have visited the center since it opened on Feb. 19th to get assistance with a variety of disaster related questions. Officials emphasize that assistance is still available by calling the toll-free FEMA Helpline at 1-800-525-0321. They also say that anyone who has not applied for assistance can still apply by calling the Toll-free Teleregistration number at 1-800-462-9029.

Disaster Assistance Application Deadline - April 15

Saturday, April 15th is the last day for persons affected by the St. Valentine's day tornadoes to apply for disaster assistance. The application period for most disasters is 60 days after the date of the incident that was Feb. 14th. Five Southwest Georgia counties were declared eligible for disaster assistance on Feb. 15th. Disaster Recovery officials say that registrations now number over 600.

Federal and State disaster officials urge anyone with uninsured damage from the tornadoes to call and apply for assistance. They say that the remaining month should be ample opportunity for those not registered to call the Toll-free Teleregistration number at 1-800-462-9029. Officials also urge anyone with disaster related questions to call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 or visit the Disaster Recovery Center on the 4th floor of the Camilla City Hall this week. That recovery center will close at 7PM on Friday, March 17, 2000.
