Flood Disaster Assistance Tops $3 Million Mark

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- More than $3.3 million in financial assistance has been approved for West Virginians affected by the February storms, landslides and flash flooding, state and federal disaster recovery officials reported today.
In just over six weeks since President Clinton's disaster declaration, the federal government has received 1217 applications from disaster victims in the 25 counties for individual assistance. The assistance to date includes:
- Disaster housing assistance amounting to $1.5 million.
- The Individual and Family Grants Program (IFG) totaling $726,784.
- U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loans of $1,045,600
Disaster housing assistance provides grants for alternate rental housing or emergency repairs to make a residence habitable. This assistance helps meet people's housing needs until long-term solutions are addressed.
IFG grants are administered by the state and are provided to assist in serious needs and necessary expenses not covered by any other assistance programs.
To date, the SBA has approved 63 disaster-related loans.
West Virginia residents or business owners who sustained storm damage may still apply for federal and state disaster assistance by dialing the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free registration number at 1-800-462-9029. Those with hearing impairments can apply by dialing 1-800-462-7585 (TTY). Both lines operate Monday through Friday from 8 A.M. to 6 P.M.
