Wise, VA -Help may be available for homeowners and renters who face mortgage foreclosure or eviction because of economic hardships related to flooding and tornadoes that occurred from April 28 to May 3.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Mortgage and Rental Assistance Program is designed to assist people whose homes were not damaged by the flooding but, because of disaster-related financial hardships, cannot make mortgage or rent payments.
To qualify for the assistance, applicants must show that there was loss of income directly related to the disaster, have a written notice of eviction or foreclosure, and have not received funds from other FEMA housing programs.
Because individuals may not run into financial hardship and receive an eviction or foreclosure notice until months following the disaster, applications for the Mortgage and Rental Assistance Program may be filed for up to six months after the May 5 disaster declaration date.
Applicants can register for mortgage or rental assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free registration number, 1-800-621-3362 or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing- impaired. The lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
