NEWBURGH, Ind. -- Residents of Vanderburgh and Warrick counties who lost work as a direct result of the November 6 tornado and severe storms may be eligible to file for disaster unemployment benefits, state and federal disaster officials announced today. However, they added, applications must be submitted no later than December 17, 2005.

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and administered by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development (IDWD). The DUA program became available as a result of President George W. Bush’s declaration of November 8, 2005.

Residents of Vanderburgh and Warrick counties may file their claims at the following locations:

Vanderburgh: WorkOne Evansville, 700 E. Walnut St., Evansville. Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Warrick: Booneville Express Local Development Corp., 224 W. Main St., Booneville. Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Residents of either county also may file their claims online with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development at www.in.gov/dwd/. Applications cannot be taken over the telephone. However, individuals can call 812-424-4473 to obtain additional information about the application process.

Payment may be made to an unemployed or self-employed worker if, as a direct result of the disaster, the individual:

  1. No longer has a job or no longer can perform regular services.
  2. Is unable to reach the place of work.
  3. Was to commence work and does not have a job or is unable to reach the job.
  4. Has become the breadwinner as major support for the household because the head of household died as a direct result of the major disaster.
  5. Cannot work because of a disaster-incurred injury.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program.
